A motorcycle crash occurred on Wednesday, April 6th, in Bridgewater, Pennsylvania, causing severe injury to a 62-year-old man. The crash occurred on Wednesday, April 6th, at 4:33 p.m. when Mark Dillon of Norristown, P.A., tried to enter the right lane of Route 22 West from the property of America’s Best Value Inn. He was operating a 2007 Yamaha FJR.
Mr. Dillon’s motorcycle collided with a trailer that was being hauled by a Ford F-550 driven by James Irwin, age 34, of Somerville. Mr. Dillon was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick with severe injuries.
While authorities helped Mr. Dillon, and conducted an investigation into the incident, Route 22 West in Bridgewater was closed from Ronson Road to North Gaston Avenue. Those who responded to the scene included firefighters from Green Knoll Fire Department District 3, the Martinsville Rescue squad, and Bridgewater police. The Traffic Safety Bureau of the Bridgewater Police Department is conducting an investigation into the crash.
It is more likely for a motorcycle accident to cause severe injury or death. Such accidents usually occur as a result of head-on collisions between motorcycles and other vehicles, left-hand turns by cars, motorcycle lane splitting, and collisions between motorists and fixed objects.
Crashes between motorcycles and other vehicles represent 56 percent of motorcycle accident fatalities. In most of these cases, specifically 78 percent of the time, the car hits the motorcycle from the front. The car hits the motorcycle from the rear just five percent of the time. Head-on collisions between a car and motorcycle frequently result in the death of the motorcyclist.
The most perilous situation for motorcyclists is where cars are making left-hand turns. Such crashes represent 42 percent of all accidents in which a motorcycle and car are involved. In most instances, the car hits the motorcycle as the motorcycle is:
- Driving directly through an intersection
- Passing the car, or
- Attempting to overtake the car
