A motorcyclist was struck from behind by a car as he reduced his speed to make a turn. John Rolick, age 65, from the Whiting section of Manchester Township, New Jersey, was ejected from the motorcycle and did not have a pulse when police responded to the scene at about 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13th.
At the site of the collision, on Route 70 close to Roosevelt City Road in Whiting, the crushed front end of a 1994 Chevy Prizm sedan was curled up behind the motorcycle. The operator of the Chevy was Christian Merrill, age 19, of Pemberton. His passenger was Haylee Korecky, age 20, also of Pemberton.
The police conducted an investigation, which revealed that Mr. Rolick had been riding in the western direction on Route 70 on a 2004 Harley Davidson, and slowed down in preparation for a left-hand turn onto Roosevelt City Road. Then, the Chevy which was also going west on Route 70, struck the rear of the motorcycle. Police and First Aid personnel performed CPR on Mr. Rolick, who had lost consciousness. However, their efforts were unsuccessful.
According to Captain Todd Malland of the Manchester Police Department, Mr. Rolick had been wearing a helmet, and the driver of the Chevy and his passenger were wearing seatbelts. The road was closed for many hours. Also at the scene were the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the county medical examiner’s office, and the state Highway Diversion Team.
