Michigan Truck Driver Makes Left Turn, Reportedly Causes Deadly Motorcycle Accident

In Lansing, Michigan, a Republican state legislator lost his life on the afternoon of Monday, September 13, when a truck driver allegedly made a left turn into his path. The Michigan State Police (MSP) released a statement that Rep. Peter Pettalia, who represented Presque Isle, was wearing a helmet when the fatal motorcycle crash occurred at 5:30 p.m.

The legislator, who advocated the 2012 repeal of Michigan’s compulsory helmet law, was headed south on M-33 in Montgomery County when the collision took place. His motorcycle reportedly hit the pickup truck broadside. The operator of the truck was a 59-year-old Fairview woman who was driving alone. She was uninjured in the motorcycle collision.

The accident occurred on M-33 in northern Michigan as Rep. Pettalia was en route to Lansing to attend a session at the House of Representatives. Although the House met Tuesday, officials stated that they would not vote on any imminent bills due to the abrupt death of Rep. Pettalia. His colleagues spoke favorably of the 61-year-old legislator, who served as Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and was finishing his final two-year term in the state House. His fellow lawmakers described him as “a great legislator and even better person” and as “…honest and sincere in all he did.” Pettalia leaves behind his wife, Karen, and two adult children, Anna and Peter.

Left-Turn Collisions involving Motorcycles

According to a study authorized by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), approximately 75 percent of all motorcycle accidents involve crashes with another vehicle. In most instances, the other vehicle is a passenger car. Additionally, roughly two-thirds of these accidents are caused by a violation of the motorcyclist’s right-of-way by the motorist operating the passenger vehicle.

The NTIS study also indicated that, in a considerable number of these cases, the accident was caused by the failure of the other motorist to notice the motorcyclist or to see the motorcyclist in time to avoid a crash.
