Fatal Motorcycle Crash in Bellmore, NY

A rider is dead after a vehicle made a right turn into traffic and reportedly crossed directly into the motorcycle rider’s path at the intersection of Oak Street and Newbridge Road in Bellmore, New York.

According to witnesses, 21-year-old Brian Sammons, of Merrick NY, was on his motorcycle and traveling southbound on Newbridge Road when a 23-year-old driver in a Chevrolet Malibu made a right turn from Oak Street onto Newbridge and crashed into the bike. A Nassau County paramedic later pronounced Sammons dead at the scene.

No charges are pending at this time.

Motorcycle Crashes on New York Roads

According to the Hurt Report, about two-thirds of motorcycle-vehicle crashes occur when the motorist suddenly accelerates directly into the bike or the bike’s path, during a right turn from a feeder street to a main street, during a left turn across traffic, or as a result of a sudden lane change.

When the Hurt Report was first released, most people drove smallish passenger cars or medium-sized station wagons that had very low profiles. Today, many people drive large pickup trucks or SUVs, so biker visibility may be even more of an issue than it was before. Indeed, many motorcycle crash victims hear the tortfeasors (negligent drivers) who crashed into them say things like “she came out of nowhere” or “I never even saw him.”

Because left-turn or right-turn motorcycle-vehicle collisions typically involve a suddenly accelerating vehicle, injuries tend to be particularly serious in these cases. These motorcycle accident injuries can include:

  • Head and Neck Injuries: Helmets offer little protection for a rider’s forehead and no protection at all for the neck and spine.
  • Road Burns: These severe abrasions tend to linger for weeks or even months because there is basically no way to treat them other than rest. As a result, injured bikers often have to endure long-term limited mobility and chronic pain.
  • Exsanguination: Blood loss tends to be severe in motorcycle accidents because of both external trauma wounds and internal injuries.

Motorcycle accidents are exempt from the no-fault law, so victims in these cases are entitled to compensation for their economic damages, such as lost wages, and their noneconomic damages, such as loss of consortium (companionship). Punitive damages are also available, in some instances.
