Bob Dylan’s Motorcycle Accident: The Crash That Changed Music History

Many fans divide Bob Dylan’s long career into two phases: before a motorcycle crash in July 1966, when he was 25 years old, and after the crash.

The details of the motorcycle accident are still largely unknown, as are the extent of Dylan’s accident-related injuries. What is known is that Dylan crashed his bike near his Woodstock home, probably on the notoriously winding Striebel Road. Since there was no police report, speculations as to the cause of the bike accident are all over the place, including sun blindness, oil slick, and operator error. As for Dylan’s injuries, he became a virtual recluse for several months; over the years, he has frequently, although not always, said he sustained a concussion and broke or sprained a vertebra in the serious motorcycle accident.

After the bike crash, the prolific performer and recorder cancelled his live shows and did not release another studio album until December 1967. Additionally, Dylanologists point out that the songs on “John Wesley Harding” and subsequent albums had a decidedly darker tone.

Motorcycle Crash Injuries

Motorcycle riders and passengers are five times more likely to be injured in crashes than vehicle occupants. Moreover, motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to die in these events. The disparity in these injury and death statistics highlights the serious nature of motorcycle crash injuries and, by extension, the incredibly long recovery period from these injuries.

Medical bills are always a top priority in these cases because psychological and emotional recovery is largely dependent on emotional recovery. Some people speculate that Bob Dylan’s refusal to go to a hospital after his crash might have made his injuries worse and extended his recuperation period. If the victim lacks the money or insurance to cover these expenses, which is nearly always the case, an attorney will send a letter of protection to third-party providers. This letter informs them that a settlement is pending and assures them of payment. Additionally, an attorney is often able to negotiate and lower the medical bills, so when the settlement funds arrive, there is more money to go around.

As a result, victims do not have to worry about things like:

  • Emergency care
  • Follow-up treatment
  • Physical rehabilitation

Victims are normally also entitled to compensation for expenses related to medical devices, prescription drugs, and incidental costs.
