Woman with Prior DUIs Causes Deadly Motorcycle Crash

In Litchfield, Conn., a woman drove across the yellow line, and crashed into a group of motorcyclists, one of whom was killed. Many of the other motorcyclists suffered injuries. The tragic accident occurred on Route 63, when a group of 18 motorcyclists were driving through the foothills.

Police arrested Elizabeth Waterbury, of Goshen Road, in Litchfield. She faces the following charges:

  • Second-degree manslaughter
  • Second-degree assault
  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated

According to Ryder Fitzgerald, a member of the Connecticut Motorcycle Riders Team, the organization has been watching as the case unfolds. The fatality indicates that motorists generally do not pay adequate attention to motorcyclists.

Police revealed that Waterbury was arrested twice recently, for intoxicated driving in New York and Connecticut. Her medical records disclose that she was driving with a blood alcohol level of .09 at the time of the accident. This is just above the legal limit.

Witnesses to the crash noticed Ms. Waterbury close to some bushes a short time following the crash, and investigators discovered three wine bottles, and a prescription bottle of pills bearing her name. There were other witnesses who observed that just before the crash, Ms. Waterbury seemed confused, and under the influence of a drug. Furthermore, a worker at her home saw her moving to and fro, and thought that she should not be driving.
