Motorcyclist Suffers Severe Injuries after Collision on Maine Road
Posted on August 2, 2016
When a motorcycle collided with an SUV that reportedly pulled out in front of the bike, the motorcyclist suffered severe injuries. The accident happened in Holden, Maine on the afternoon of Friday, July 15. According to police, the motorcyclist could not avoid striking the SUV on Route 1, which was filled with traffic at the time.
According to Holden Police Officer Ed Benjamin, when the operator of the SUV attempted to make a left turn onto Route 1A from Upper Dedham Road, he collided with a motorcyclist who was driving toward Ellsworth. The motorcyclist is from Brewer and is said to be 44 years old. However, his identity was not disclosed because authorities were first going to notify his family of the motorcycle accident. He was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where doctors treated him for his injuries
Officer Benjamin said that the two vehicles T-boned. As a result of the collision, the front tire and headlight of the motorcycle were crushed. The debris remained in the roadway while accident reconstructionists evaluated the scene. Police asked for reconstruction mapping because of the nature of the biker’s injuries. The crash happened in the vicinity of G&M Holden Market in Holden and shut down traffic for a while.
Officer Benjamin said that the motorist did not see the motorcycle. The driver of the SUV was later transported to the hospital to take a blood alcohol test, which is standard procedure in major crashes. The motorist did not suffer any injuries.
This is yet another example of a motorist possibly failing to see a motorcyclist while attempting to make a left turn. In some collisions, the motorist may have been under the influence. The results of the blood test in this case will reveal whether that was the case. In other crashes, the motorist may simply have been distracted. Whatever the reason was for this serious motorcycle accident, the motorcyclist may well have a claim of negligence against the motorist.
