Motorcyclist Dies in Rhode Island When Motorist Attempts Left Turn
Posted on August 1, 2016
A collision between a motorcycle and a car resulted in the death of the motorcyclist and severe injuries to his passenger. The tragic motorcycle accident happened on Route 1 just north of Thurston Street in Rhode Island on Saturday, July 16 at about 2:10 p.m. The motorcyclist was later identified as 35-year-old Joseph Carpentier of Woonsocket. His passenger was a 15-year-old boy.
An investigation revealed that a 46-year-old man from Mansfield was driving on Thurston Street in a Subaru Outback when he made a turn onto Route 1 in the northern direction. As the motorist tried to make a left turn across the travel lane, he reportedly crashed into the motorcycle.
Carpentier, who was operating a 2010 Victory Cross Country motorcycle, was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where he was declared dead. His passenger was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was treated for severe injuries. Meanwhile, the driver of the Subaru and his three passengers did not sustain any serious injuries in the auto accident.
Since the accident is under investigation by state police, the identities of the other individuals involved in the accident have not been revealed. This marks the third deadly motorcycle accident to take place in the area since late June. On July 2, a woman who was test-driving a motorcycle lost her life after she hit a pole. And on June 26, a motorcyclist was killed after he was hit by an allegedly intoxicated driver.
The most common type of motorcycle accident occurs when a vehicle is making a left turn in front of the motorcyclist. The motorist may not notice the biker or may misjudge the biker’s speed prior to turning in front of the motorcycle at an intersection. The failure of the motorist to see the motorcyclist can be attributed to distracted driving, lack of attention, blind spots, or merely the perception of an absence of cars.
