According to witnesses, a 61-year-old woman driving an SUV had stopped in the #1 lane and was waiting to turn left on Kearny Street. Witnesses said that the woman’s turn signal was on while she waited. As she started to turn left, the motorcyclist and his passenger reportedly collided with the left-front of the SUV. The motorcyclist and his passenger were hurled from the bike.
The Riverside Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team is currently conducting an investigation into the motorcycle crash.
Motorcycle Accidents and Left Turns
Motorcycle accidents that are caused by cars and SUVs often take place at intersections. Left-turn accidents can be especially perilous for motorcyclists. The Institute for Highway Safety revealed that 39 percent of deadly motorcycle accidents involving two vehicles in 2011 happened when one car was making a left turn and the motorcycle was moving in a straight line to pass or overtake the car.
In many instances, the person who turned left is the one at fault for a motorcycle accident. This is because a motorist is not supposed to make a left turn until it is safe to do so. While motorists sometimes claim that they could not see the motorcycle on the roadway, it is still their responsibility to make certain that there are no oncoming vehicles prior to making the left turn.
